New UK Travel Requirement: ETA for European Citizens

News

Starting April 2, 2025, European citizens will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit the United Kingdom (UK). This rule applies to all travelers from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland, essentially, all EU passport holders.

An ETA is a digital entry permit required before traveling to the UK. It is not a visa, but you must obtain it before your trip.

Applications open March 5, 2025, and the process is online and straightforward.

Visit the official UK government website (provided by authorities).
Fill out the application form.
Pay the £10 fee (via the UK ETA app or GOV.UK). From April 9, 2025, the fee increases to £16.
Receive approval within a few days.
European citizens traveling for tourism, business, family visits, or short stays must get an ETA, except for UK residents or those with a valid UK visa. Without an ETA, you cannot board your flight or ferry to the UK. Stay cautious, only use the official government website to apply, as other sites may charge more. Check official UK travel websites regularly and apply early to avoid delays.
