afrika! Community Award 2018

MoneyGram Germany has in recent years redefined their corporate social responsibilities in the African communities. The new trend is a Give and Take approach, dealing directly with Diaspora organizations, individual initiatives and community base company’s committed to social good.

The lucky winners of the afrika! Community Award this year are selected from 4 different categories; Sport, Social Engagements & Education, Companies and Culture. Of the 150 applicants, 8 came out successful. Remember the Africa community has over 700 non profit making organizations in Germany.
Social Engagements & Education:

Maisha e.V. The Frankfurt based NGO won the first position and took with them a prize money of 500€. The African Women in Germany association is active in helping people in search of jobs, accommodation, Medi
care, writing of application and many others. They have won several awards over the years. www.maisha.org

Kita Sankofa e.V
The bilingual day nursery school came second and took home 250€. The school takes in children from the age 1 -6 years, it uses innovative methods in teaching the  children.

Business:

Oriwo Design, the Hamburg based fashion label, own by Florence came first, she designs perfect and stylish dresses using mostly materials from her home country Kenya, with the main purpose of supporting smaller start-ups. She was awarded a prize worth 500€.

Kingsley3Tabotgraphy -Kingsley Tabot came second; the New York trained photographer has supported almost all institutions in and around Hamburg with his unique photos. The social engaged Cameroonian took home 250€. He is the publisher of the Tabot calendar with smartly dressed African queens.www.tabotgraphy.com

Sports:
The FC Afrisko football club in Berlin came first, the African club uses sporting activities to empower members, network, socialize and above all speed up integration. Sports remain one of the most effective tools in bringing with people with diverse backgrounds together. They won 500€

The Titan e.V. mostly formed by students of migrant backgrounds and refugees came second. The Berlin club won 250€

Culture:

Roots and wings e.V.
won the first position. The African Diaspora initiative began as a Facebook movement in 2010, by the then student now Dr. Mbianda. It has more than 23,000 followers and several Youtube Tutotrial videos.

The Afro Beauty Festival organizers are well known for their Make-Up, Hairstyle, and head-wraps. The innovative and creative organization is well known for the Afro beats, Afro model and the Miss & Mister nappy Germany. They won the first prize money of 500€.

“Africa Charity und Kultur” came second and entitled to 250€.  Their main focus is helping improve the social economic well being of their people in the democratic republic of Congo. They have made it a goal to lobby for an African Community Center in the NRW region of Germany.

The 5 Jury members are made up of African community leaders, MoneyGram staffs and the editorial board of Afrika Portal. The prizes were presented by Mrs Irmgard Bruecker & Mr. Andrea Maramotti executive directors of the company. The yearly prize giving ceremony is sponsored by MoneyGram and organized by ZaMedia.
